How to Prepare Corten Steel Planters for Planting
Follow these simple steps to get your planter ready for healthy plants and long-lasting use.
1. Choose the right location
Place the planter on a level surface.
Avoid placing directly on porous materials like stone or concrete during the rusting phase, as runoff may stain.
2. Let the rust (patina) develop (optional but recommended)
New corten steel will develop a protective rust layer over time.
You can wait until this layer forms before planting.
To speed up the process, lightly spray with a mix of water and salt for a few days.
3. Add a drainage layer
Add 5–10 cm of coarse gravel, crushed stone, or clay pebbles at the bottom.
Place landscape fabric or geotextile over the stones to keep soil separate.
4. Add soil
Use high-quality, well-draining soil suited for your plants.
Avoid heavy clay soil, which retains too much water.
Mix in compost if needed for extra nutrients.
5. Plant and water
Add your plants and fill in with soil.
Water thoroughly and let excess water drain through the bottom holes.
6. Maintain
Make sure drainage holes don’t get blocked over time.
In winter, avoid water buildup that could freeze and expand.
Use rubber pads or trays if placing on surfaces that could stain.
That’s it! Your planter is ready to enjoy.
