Corten steel
A durable, weather-resistant steel that forms a natural patina over time — no painting needed. Built to last and age beautifully outdoors with a lifespan of 20+ years.
Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a durable alloy made from iron with small amounts of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. What makes it unique is its ability to form a stable, rust-like patina when exposed to the elements. This layer acts as a natural barrier, protecting the steel beneath from further corrosion—eliminating the need for painting or sealing.
In garden design, corten steel is a favorite for good reason. Its earthy, evolving color blends beautifully with plants, stone, and wood, making it ideal for planters, fire bowls, and other outdoor features. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, corten steel is low-maintenance, long-lasting, and able to withstand harsh weather conditions year-round.
By combining raw, industrial character with natural aging, corten steel adds warmth and authenticity to any outdoor space—proving that true beauty only gets better with time.
Planters and other corten items arrive in a raw steel finish (silver-grey). A natural rust patina will form over time, creating a warm, protective surface unique to each piece.
Corten Steel Care Instructions
Let it weather naturally – Corten steel forms a protective rust-like patina over time. No sealing or painting is needed.
Avoid standing water – Ensure proper drainage to prevent water buildup, especially in planters.
Protect surrounding surfaces – During the patina process, rust runoff may stain stone, concrete, or wood. Place items on gravel or non-porous surfaces if needed.
Not recommended for coastal areas – Salt in the air can accelerate corrosion beyond the protective patina. Avoid placing corten steel items near the sea.
Clean gently – Use a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt. Avoid harsh chemicals or pressure washing.
Seasonal checks – Inspect drainage holes and feet occasionally to ensure proper water flow and ventilation.
